Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Remembrance Day 2019

Our school captains witnessed the official opening of the Blair Wark VC Community Centre at Lindfield when they attended the Remembrance Day commemoration held there for the first time.

Lieutenant Colonel Phil Pyke of the Australian Defence Force delivered the opening address and he and other speakers reminded the audience of the sacrifice of local residents in wartime. Local school students then laid wreaths or poppies at the memorial table before the Mayor of Ku-ring-gai, Jennifer Anderson, cut the ribbon to officially open the centre.

The centre is named after Blair Anderson Wark VC, who was awarded the highest military honour for actions in commanding his troops over a three day period during World War I. After the war, he became a prominent citizen in the Ku-ring-gai region.

The school vice-captains were also busy representing the school at the annual Hornsby RSL Remembrance Day commemorations at the Hornsby Cenotaph.

Sun Safe Initiative for Ku-ring-gai High School

At Ku-ring-gai High School, we are committed to encouraging our students to always wear a hat whilst in the sun. To make this possible we have purchased a navy blue cap for every student in the school including our 2020 Year 7 students.

From next week all students will be offered in roll call a free navy blue cap.

We will begin with Years 7, 8 and 9. Students will sign to indicate that they have received their free cap. Years 10, 11 and 12 , and teachers, will receive theirs the following week.

Ku-ring-gai is a uniformed school.

Once these caps have been issued students will be reminded that other caps with logos or hats of a different colour, will not be permitted. Plain navy caps or floppy sun hats are acceptable. If families choose to enrol their child with us then we understand that they have agreed to support our school rules and procedures.

I am proud of all of our students and staff for taking responsibility for sun safety.

We may feel like we are in a building site but the truth is we actually are!

How exciting that we can already see the wonderful new teaching and learning spaces taking shape. The outdoor art space, drama performance, and rehearsal auditorium and the music outdoor amphitheatre.

On 30th October the concrete slab was poured for our new school hall with up to 200 trucks involved in delivering the concrete on that day.

Three newly refurbish classrooms have been handed over for use and our teachers and students have expressed how pleased they are with them.

Breaking news- Our binishell has been recommended for national heritage listing. It is worth researching the history of the binishell design which was created by Dante Bini an Italian architect. His design is to be found in many countries across the world.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Ku-ring-gai High School is proud to again participate in the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Secondary Schools Cadet Program.

Today, sixteen Year 10 students commenced a nine-week program that teaches them new skills that will last a lifetime. Students are given an insight into fire safety and prevention whilst developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and volunteerism.

This program is primarily coordinated and delivered by NSW RFS volunteers. Our sincere thank you goes to our local brigades.

Alumni in Focus: Kaya Weight

We were recently contacted by the parents of Ku-ring-gai High School Alumni Kaya Weight.

Kaya left Ku-ring-gai in 2015 to pursue her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. She began full-time ballet training at The Conlan College until 2017 when she was then invited to train on scholarship at Classical Ballet 121 with Gillian Revie, who was a principal artist with the Royal Ballet in the United Kingdom.

In 2018, Kaya traveled to seven different countries while completing long-distance education & competing in prestigious ballet competitions. She was also auditioning all over Europe and America to attend a Ballet finishing school with the hope to one day become a professional ballerina.

Recently, life took a sudden change and her dreams have come true! She has been fast-tracked after being seen at a competition and is now employed by The Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB).

"We appreciate all your support, inspirational words and encouragement to Kaya pursuing a career in the arts. Thank you for being a part of our daughter's education and a part of making her who she is."
- Angelina & David Weight

You can read more about Kaya's achievement at the following link:

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Prize winning poetry: Peter Markwick Poetry Competition.

Two Year 10 students discovered they had a prize-winning gift for poetry this week when first and runner-up places were awarded in the Peter Markwick Poetry Competition.

Mr. Markwick was a student at the school when it was founded in the 1960s. His passion for poetry and art led him to sponsor an annual poetry writing competition at our school, the Bill Eason Poetry Cup.

Sadly, Mr. Markwick died last year but his wife, Ms. Cheryl Tate, ensured that the competition would go on. She was on hand to present awards and prizes to the winning entrants.

Congratulations to Ayesha for 'Our Mistake, Her Undoing', a short poem lamenting the slow destruction of our Earth through pollution and neglect; and to Ashleigh for her examination of inner turmoil in 'Just Keep Breathing'.

Winners were then invited for refreshments with Ms. Tate in the Catherine Jinks Library.

Thanks to all the students who entered the competition and we look forward to running it again later this year.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Anzac Commemoration Ceremony 2019

The Anzac Commemoration ceremony is a respectful reflective occasion at Ku-ring-Gai High School.

In the final week of Term 1, students, teachers, staff and guests gathered in the Margaret Preston Hall to commemorate all who served and those who died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations as well as the contribution and suffering of all those who served.

Our School Captains Pierce and Grace led the assembly and delivered an impactful speech about the soldiers return and the meaning of Anzac Day. We also had performances by our Concert Band and a TEP Drama Ensemble piece directed by Mr. Hennessy.

A synthesis of film, dance, and music was the centrepiece of the commemoration, as seen at the link below.

‘Echoes of the past’ a film produced by Mr. Redshaw provided historic imagery and commentary of conflicts faced by Anzac soldiers. The film served as a backdrop and was complemented by a dance piece, ‘Aftermath’, choreographed by Ms. Dunn and performed by our HSC Dance students. A fitting musical item, ‘Safety of Distance’, performed by Ryan Lasek, accompanied by Louisa Pang, Sora Wakaki and Andrew Liang concluded the performance.

As tradition at Ku-ring-gai, Year 7 Students, Peer Support Leaders, Prefects and invited guests visited the Sphinx Memorial in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to conclude the ceremony.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Schools Clean Up Australia Day 2019

In 1989 an 'average Australian bloke' had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney Harbour. This simple idea has now become the nation's largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day.

On Friday 1 March, we showed our commitment to protecting and respecting our beautiful environment by participating in Clean Up Australia Day for schools. It was wonderful to see so many students from Year 7 to Year 12 come to school prepared with their own gloves and bags for collection of rubbish.

Thank you to all who participated, and we know that it will inspire us all to be more conscious of ensuring our litter always goes into the bin!

Change starts with you!

Principal's Message

Ku-ring-gai High School is a school that values and works closely with its students and families to ensure that every child has all the necessary opportunity for personal and academic achievement.

Today, the challenges for families and educators today are immense. We talk about future focused learning at Ku-ring-gai High School and of preparing young people for successful lives – but what does that really mean? Is it just about learning, skills and competencies or is there a little more?

From its establishment in 1965, Ku-ring-gai High School has a proud history of global connectedness and has fostered a true understanding of the meaning of the word "humanity". As a learning community we are more focused than ever on ensuring that 'harmony in diversity' remains our underpinning belief , that our school will always be a safe haven for all students and every student will be respectful of each other at all times. Therefore, our future focused learning is strengthened by a solid ethical base. But what is future focussed learning? Young people today are citizens of a rapidly changing world. This is a world of instant answers and connectivity through technology. Our challenge as educators is to engage young people in:

Their ways of thinking - critical thinking, creative thinking, and deep thinking which encourages them to not just accept the answers they can find online but to question them and then to know what to do with the answers and information.

Working in the 21st century - developing skills of communication and collaboration.

The tools necessary for working - information and technology literacies to complement numeracy and literacy skills.

Preparation for a successful and fulfilled life - an understanding of citizenship, responsibility, resilience and a strong sense of justice and equality for all.

Our talent enrichment program is the epitome of future focused and creativity in learning. Every student from Years 7-10 has 4 extra hours of subjects of their choice per week. They are able to choose from a wide range of subjects including the arts, dance, drama, 3D design, animation, film making, voice, instrument, creative writing, big history, environmental studies and sports options. Each subject is focusing on problem solving, creativity, communication and collaboration.

Our expectation at Ku-ring-gai High School is that through personalised innovative and challenging learning programs, every student will be an effective learner, challenged in their learning and given a variety of assessment tasks that allow all students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. In guiding this learning process, students are encouraged to think critically, work co-operatively and always to reflect upon their learning.

Our learning environment fosters creativity. With the recognition that the learning environment is the third teacher, Ku-ring-gai High School is outstanding with its 25 acres of beautiful parkland surrounding the national park, welcoming and flexible learning spaces and modern specialised rooms including science laboratories, commercial kitchens, and technology spaces.

The first teacher is the parent. We work closely with families through the parent and citizens committee, surveys and questionnaires so that we truly reflect the expectations of our families.

Our teachers are passionate educators who know their students and how they best learn. As a smaller secondary school, between 600 and 650 students we have the advantage of smaller classes and individual learning programs.

Ku-ring-gai High School is a community that values the individual worth and contribution of all its members. Our school ensures excellent student centred, coeducational and comprehensive education with a positive focus on developing outstanding opportunities for students in the creative arts.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Ku-ring-gai High School House Championship

At our first school assembly for 2019 we introduced the Ku-ring-gai High School House Championship.

In 2019 the championship has been expanded. With more chances to participate and more chances to win!

Our House system acts as a link between the Year Groups, supporting our Talent Enrichment Program in the school, providing students with opportunities for working, competing and collaborating together.

Encouraging a healthy sense of competition and recognising the contribution of all students for participation, sporting and academic achievements.

Points are accumulated by individual students, tallying towards a House total to determine the winners of the KHS Carnival Cup, KHS House Cup and ultimately the KHS House Championship.

Tagore, Lincoln, Churchill or Curie, who will win the coveted 2019 House Championship!?

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.
