Career education at Ku-ring-gai High School is an ongoing, integrated process building on concepts throughout Years 7 – 12. The program is concerned with the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences.
The Careers Adviser is Ms Sonya Froment. The Australian blueprint for careers development framework is used for planning, implementing and evaluating the career development program at Ku-ring-gai High School. A range of career development opportunities are provided in supporting students to explore and define their career aspirations, develop career goals, and investigate career options. The program assists students to make informed decisions about school, post school education, training and employment options and participation in the community. Students develop knowledge and understanding of themselves and others as individuals, the capacity to analyse and plan career decisions and manage work transitions.
Exploring and experiencing first hand, study and career options is an integral part of the career education program. Students are given opportunities to participate in industry visits, university workshops, taste of TAFE workshops, (technical and vocational education and training) TVET courses, career expos, training courses and school to work projects.
The careers resource centre is available to all students and offers a large range of career resources and information. The careers adviser offers careers counselling, assistance with subject selections and also university, TAFE, scholarship and job applications. The school subscribes to 'my high school careers' where students and parents can register to receive the latest updated career information and calendar events. Students in Year 10 participate in careers lessons.
Work experience
Year 10 students have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement for one week. It is a valuable learning experience and all Year 10 students are encouraged to apply. In careers lessons, Year 10 students will be taken through the procedures and safety requirements for planning a work experience placement.
Our work experience program is flexible and students may undertake work experience at a time suitable to the employer and student. A work experience placement may be undertaken at any time throughout the year except two weeks prior to examinations, examination periods, school carnivals or other school commitments. Students cannot do work experience during the school holidays. Work experience interstate cannot be approved.
Applying for a tax file number (TFN)
Applications are made online at the Australian Taxation Office website click on the individual tab and follow the links to "apply for a TFN". When the online application is completed, the applicant needs to take a copy of the application receipt and 100 points of identification to the post office for validation.
